Just like most every other rule there are exceptions. We install W4x13 Steel I-Beams for most applications. Steel is rated by weight not thickness or gauge. W4x13 steel I-Beams are 4”x4” and weigh 13lbs. per foot. They are the most common structural repair specified by engineers today.
